Community Policing Initiatives taken up by Dakshina Kannada District Police

Dakshina Kannada District comprising of the five taluks of Mangalore, Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur and Sullia, is one of the most well developed districts of Karnataka State. It is not only educationally and economically very developed but also stands ahead of most districts of the state in all development indices. Unfortunately the district on the crime front is also known for Organised Crime and on the Law and Order front is one of the most communally sensitive districts of the state. The problem of underworld criminals and organized crime is mainly due to the large scale economic activity in the district  and the close links to Mumbai and its underworld. Though the district has been communally sensitive historically, it is only recently that it has reached epic proportions. In view of all the above, the district police has taken up certain measures towards bringing the two communities together and bridging the communal divide and discouraging youngsters from taking to crime.

Police Youth Clubs:

Every police station under the supervision of the Station House Officer has organized a Police Youth club with membership from youth of all the communities, involving them into activities like games, health check up camps, discussions and meetings etc. The results have been positive so far.

Students Contact Programs.

A team of Police Officers select one college per week and organize a discussion program with all the students, clearing all issues in the minds of students like, communal politics in colleges, moral policing, role of the police and society in curbing crime so that students come forward and support the police in their lawful duties and also come forward proactively in helping the police in controlling crime.
